Learn how to build meaningful assessment activities that support text and file-based learner submissions.
Overview
Assessments in Thirst allow you to create tasks that learners complete by submitting written responses and/or file uploads. These can be used for scenario-based activities, reflective writing, or demonstrations of practical skills. This guide walks you through how to create and configure an assessment.
What is an Assessment?
An Assessment is a content type that enables learners to respond to a prompt using either a text entry, a file upload, or both. Responses are submitted for review, and the activity is only marked complete once the submission has been accepted by the content creator or an admin user.
Create an Assessment
When creating content, select Assessment as the content type.
You’ll see options to:
-
Add a Description (this is the learner-facing prompt).
-
Toggle on or off Text Entry or File Upload as submission options.
Note: You must enable at least one submission method to publish the assessment.
Configure Submission Settings
Click the settings cog to open a modal where you can:
-
For Text Entry:
-
Set a minimum and/or maximum character count.
-
The default minimum is 100 characters.
- The default for maximum is 1000 characters.
-
-
For File Uploads:
-
Enable supported file types (e.g. video, image, document).
-
Choose the maximum number of files learners can submit.
-
If file uploads are disabled, the interface will appear in greyscale and will not be visible on the learner side.
Configure Submission Requirements
The Submission Requirements dropdown allows content creators to specify which of the enabled submission methods are required as part of the assessment.
You can choose from:
-
Either text or file – Learners can submit either method to complete the assessment.
-
Both text and file – Learners must submit both a text entry and a file.
-
Text only – Only the text response is required; file upload is optional or hidden.
-
File upload only – Only a file submission is required; text input is optional or hidden.
Note: The available submission requirements will depend on the submission methods enabled.
Getting the most out of Assessments
-
Use file upload restrictions to ensure learners provide the right type of evidence (e.g. videos and powerpoint for presentation tasks).
-
Tailor the character count minimums to suit your activity (longer for reflective tasks, shorter for quick checks).
-
Combine Assessments with Learning Journeys to embed them into a broader programme.
